miniature hexagon flower (1/4") tutorial with free template

By Hatun Comak → Wednesday, September 9, 2020

Hexagons are one of the most popular patterns among english paper piecing lovers, so is mine. Depending on the project I have been working on, I use various hexagons in various size but this is the first time I have made such tiny hexies. They are 1/4". I must say it is tedious and a little bit fussy but when you finish making a hexagon flower, it is lovely and adorable.

Look how tiny these hexagon flowers are! I started sewing these 1/4" hexagon flowers without any plan on mind. I thought, well I should  give it a try. And I like the result, 1/4" hexagon flowers are lovely. The first one I made was appliqued on a face mask.

These tiny hexagons are not only cute but also perfect for your trash. You can make and put them away to applique on a face mask, zipper pouch, a bag or even you can make a whole quilt.

So here I tell how I sew tiny hexgon flowers with useful tips.

Instructions

  • Print out and cut the hexagon pieces. For a hexagon flower you need seven hexagons.

  • Place the template on the wrong side of the fabric and cut around the hexagon with 1/4" allowance. If you make allowance smaller, it will be harder to work with.

  • Start basting hexies. I prefer thread basting. You can watch the video tutorial below also to see how to baste 1/4" hexagons.

  • When you finish basting seven hexagons, it is time to attach them to make a nice tiny hexagon flower.

  • Make sure you line up edges nicely. The first stitch should start from the corner. The stitches should be closer to the edge so that they can't bee seen. You stitch till the other corner, go back one stitch to tie off and cut off the thread.

  • Continue the same process adding other hexagons to make the flower. You sew the center hexagon last. You can also watch the video below to see how to make hexafon flower.

  • When you finish sewing hexagon, press with iron and if you are going to use the tiny hexagon flower for appliqu, pull out the basting stitches. Gently pull away the papers and it is ready for applique.

I hope you get the inspiration to start your own project. These tiny hexagon flowers are lovely and worth trying.

Enjoy it!

twisted hexagon coaster tutorial

By Hatun Comak → Saturday, November 9, 2019

Twisted hexagons are made up of one hexagon and six half hexagons of the same size. Twisted hexagons can be made by using english paper piecing method. There are some other ways of doing them, but I preferred english paper piecing method, which I like pretty much.

I made these lovely twisted hexagon coasters and prepared a tutorial also. This lovely project is beginner friendly. If you would like to make one for yourself, follow the instructions below.

Twisted hexagon tutorial

  • You will need four hexagons for one coaster. I used 2.5 " hexagons for this one. If you need the hexagon templates with free download, it is HERE
  • Cut out your hexagon and cut another three hexagons into two. These are the templates for the twisted pieces of the hexagon. You should have one hexagon and six half hexagon. These will be arranged like this:
  • Since you have the templates of a twisted hexagon, time to start sewing. Choose your fabrics and baste the pieces and sew them together. If you are new to english paper piecing, have a look at my ENGLISH PAPER PIECING TUTORIAL where I explain how to baste hexies and sew them together.

  • After sewing them together, press with iron and remove the paper. Press again. Press seams outward and trim the excess strip end.

  • The next step is making the quilt sandwich. Layer the batting on backing fabric on top of hexagon unit.

  • With 1/4" seam allowance, stitch around five sides of the hexagon, leaving the sixth side unsewn.

  • Trim excess fabric and batting, turn right side out, press and pin the open edge. Topstitch around whole coaster and you have finished! How about making them for Christmas. They will make perfect gifts.

hexagon flower quilt tutorial

Among the quilt projects, already been started and still in progress, hexies are always my favourite. Working with hexies is like a therapy. God! It is so relaxing. The process is slow, though. But no hurries!

I have planned to make a  flower garden baby quilt with hexagon flowers. My five year old son also loves playing with hexies and he helps me setting the layout.

At the same time I can 't resist starting some other quilt projects, trying some new techniques or patterns. I work by english paper piecing, foundation paper piecing, hand sewing and machine sewing. All at a time!
But nowadays I mostly deal with my hexies. If you are new to english paper piecing, and learn making these hexagon flowers, have a look at

If you need free hexagon templates to download, you can find them HERE
There are many variations of flower gardens and the options are limitless. I admire the creativity of these quilters with different quilts. Here mine is a traditional flower garden quilt. Once basting the hexies, I prepared the flowers and then it comes to assembling the flowers together. I was concerned either to go row by row or flower by flower. So I decided to go flower by flower. Though working with hexies seams easy to work, it takes a lot of time. I used 1 inch hexagons here. Just will be so happy when it will be finished.

I almost finished the quilt top of this hexagon flowers baby quilt. I will just add sone more hexagons and then a border. Then comes the quilting part. I am quite happy with the result. It will most probably be gifted. Once it's finished, I will share the final result but just couldn't wait to share before I have finished.

What are your WIPs anc how many do you have at a time?
