Five Point Star + Kaleidoscope Block

An English Paper Piecing handwork project is ideal for carrying it around while you are on the go. So if you are into quilting and want to take your project wherever you go, I highly recommend EPP projects.

Today I'm sharing  Five Point Star tutorial with you following Kaleidoscope Quilt Block.

I used 1.5" 72 degree diamonds while making five point stars and 36 degree diamonds for making Kaleidoscope Quilt Block. But let's star with five point star.

Here we go!

Step-by-step Tutorial

  • First of all, prepare your paper templates. Below I share 72 degree and 36 degree diamond templates which you can download and use for free.
  • Cut out the diamonds needed. For five point star you will need five 72 degree diamonds. While cutting your fabric, add 1/4" seam allowance. You may leave a liitle bigger seam allowance since you may fing it easier to baste.
  • It is important to baste each diamond the same way, I baste through clockwise. I prefer stitching while basting. Gluing is another option.
  • Lay your diamond out as you would like them to bee seen in your star. Here I preferred the same fabric, since it is marbled, placement stil matters.
  • Take two of the diamonds right sides together and start from the one edge, sew through the next edge.
  • After two diamonds are sewn together, pick the third piece and stitch on in the same way, this time sewing from the center to the outer edge.
  • Continue stitching the fourth and the fifth diamonds. If you are totally new to EPP technique, you may want to have a look at my ENGLISH PAPER PIECING TUTORIAL.
  • The finished star should have the center points all meeting without a hole. So pay attention stitching neatly. Press with iron. And it's finished.

There are numerous options you can make with five point star quilt block. You can simply make a star coaster by adding 36 degree diamonds around. Using it for applique is another option. You can make a total quilt  by making lots of five point stars which can be combined with 36 degree diamonds.
